Dordt College Volleyball vs. Point Loma-National Tournament

(San Diego, California) The Dordt College Lady Defenders improved to 2-0 in pool play at the NAIA national volleyball tournament this afternoon in San Diego, California.

The Lady Defenders knocked off the host school, Point Loma Nazarene University by game scores of 26-30, 30-18, 30-24, 30-19, avenging a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Sea Lions last season at the national tournament.

Point Loma extended a 9-4 lead early in game one and fought off a rally by the Lady Defenders that closed the gap to 23-22. The Sea Lions then outscored Dordt 5-0 after the timeout and go the win.

Game two saw Tara De Boer knock down five kills and the Lady Defenders won convincingly 30-18.

The match actually hinged on game three where the two teams fought through 17 ties, the last at 23-23, before Dordt forged in front 27-23 before winning 30-24. The Lady Defenders took the lead for good in game four at 5-4 and won by a 30-19 margin.

Dordt was led by Tara De Boer's 21 kills while Rachel Van Beek and Jill Haan had 16 and 15 kills respectively. Kristin De Ronde and Lindsey Van Wyk both hit double figures as well with 10 kills while Emily Van Voorst put up a whopping 65 assists. Van Wyk and Traci Kooima led the Lady Defenders in digs with 21 while Haan also had four solo blocks and 16 digs. As a team the Lady Defenders were 72-73 in serve receptions.

Point Loma was topped by Kate Alderson with 14 kills. Point Loma is now 0-2 in pool play.
