September 17, 2003
(Orange City, Iowa) The 14th-rated Lady Defenders fought 22nd-rated Northwestern to the end in five games tonight before finally taking a 3-2 decision over the Red Raiders. Northwestern caught the Lady Defenders on their heels early in the first game, before Dordt came fighting back. It wasn't enough, however, as the Red Raiders took a 31-29 win.
Game two was a little more even with both teams battling to a 26-all tie before Dordt ripped off four straight points for the 30-26 victory.
Game three featured 17 ties in a back-and-forth battle. Dordt built a 24-20 lead late, then Northwestern built a 29-25 edge. Dordt came back to tie the score at 29 and then again at 30 before Northwestern scored the final two points of the game.
Dordt took the must-win game four, 30-23, to force the fifth and final game of the match. Northwestern took a 7-4 lead early in that fifth match, but let Dordt make a seven-point run to take the lead for good. The Defenders scored 11 of the final 13 points of the game to seal the victory.
Rachel Van Beek and Tara De Boer put up solid numbers for Dordt tonight with 24 and 22 kills, respectively. Jill Bouma had 32 digs and Lindsey Van Wyk added 29 for the Lady Defenders. Maggie Freiborg had 29 kills for the Red Raiders.
