Dordt College Softball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender softball team was unable to hold a 5-0 lead and fell by a final of 8-5 in game one of their doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, South Dakota on Tuesday night.

The Defenders scored two in the third and two in the fourth and one more in the fifth for the 5-0 advantage but the hosts plated two in the home half of the fifth and another six in the sixth inning to earn their eighth win of the season.

A Bethany Dykstra homerun in the third inning opened the scoring for the Defenders as she drove in Andrea Pierce who had started the frame with a single. The fourth inning runs came when Pierce singled in a pair with the bases loaded. Dordt missed at an even bigger frame as they stranded a pair of baserunners.

A double by Dordt’s all-time homerun leader, Ashton Bearid started the inning with a double and then scored on an error when Michal Hoogland singled. Dordt again left two runners stranded.

Wesleyan’s two fifth inning runs came on three hits and they sent ten batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored six runs on five hits while capitalizing on two errors. Dordt went in order in the seventh in falling 8-5.

Dordt was outhit 11-6 and both teams committed two errors. Pierce had the only multiple hit game for the Defenders and Dykstra and Erica White had a homerun and double respectively. Sidney Larsen shouldered the loss while surrendering eight runs—five of them earned, on 11 hits and two walks with a strikeout.

Wesleyan’s Jill Dickson was the winner while giving up six hits and walking three with 13 strikeouts.
