Dordt College Softball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender softball team won a cold, rain-soaked decision over Briar Cliff in game two of their doubleheader in GPAC play at Sioux Center on Wednesday, April 16. With temperatures dropping through the game into the mid-30s and rain steady rain for most of the contest, the Defenders held on to win 15-13 after leading by as many as eight runs.
Dordt scored five runs on two hits and five walks and 11 batters came to the plate.
Briar Cliff answered with a pair of runs in the third inning but Dordt scored one in the home half of the frame with Sidney Larsen singling in Samantha Dunn after Dunn had led off the inning with a double. Dordt added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when they capitalized on two hits and two errors. Sidney Larsen tripled in two runs and Samantha Dunn also had a triple. Larsen scored on a throwing error to make the score 10-2 going to the top of the fifth inning.
With the eight run rule looming in the top of the fifth, the Chargers managed five runs on three hits but Dordt got three of those runs back in the fifth with Jaden Smolders clubbing a single that plated two and Samantha Dunn had a double.
The Chargers scored another run in the the sixth but the Defenders again had an answer with two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Ashton Beaird homered for the seventh time this season and the 20th time in her career. Beairdís homerun tied her with Sarah Seymour for the career record at Dordt College.
Briar Cliff got five runs across in the seventh before Sidney Larsen came on to record the final two outs.
Samantha Dunn went six and a third innings and allowed 12 runs on 12 hits with five walks and got the win. Larsen recorded the save. Dunn helped her own cause with four hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Beaird was 2-3 with four runs scored.
Briar Cliff was 3-5 with four runs batted in and Celena Vasquez was 3-4 with two runs batted in.
Dordt is 5-11 in the GPAC and 9-25 overall while Briar Cliff is 15-15 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Dordt will next play Dakota State on Monday, April 21 in Madison, South Dakota.
