Dordt College Softball vs. Midland

(Fremont, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender softball team lost a 7-6 decision to Midland on Saturday, April 12 in Fremont, Nebraska. The Warriors won it by tying it in the bottom of the seventh and winning it with a run in eighth.

Dordt’s first run came in the top of the first when Ashton Beaird singled in Kassidy Van Voorst who led off the inning with a walk.

Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Warriors scored two runs on four hits and left the bases loaded.

The Defenders got those runs back when they plated three in the top of the fifth inning. Ashton Beaird singled in a run and Jayden Smolders walked with the bases loaded. Andrea Pierce also scored on a passed ball for a 4-2 lead.

Midland answered again in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs on three hits.

Dordt retook the lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a pair of wild pitches.

Clinging to a two run lead the Defenders allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra frames.

Dordt was retired in the seventh with Kassidy Van Voorst getting thrown out trying to steal second base.

Midland won it with a walk, a single and a sacrifice advanced the runners to second and third and back to back walks forced the winning run in.

Dordt was outhit 11-8 with all of their hits being accounted for with singles. Kassidy Van Voorst and Ashton Beaird both had two hits and two runs scored and Beaird had a pair of runs batted in.

Haley Fligge went the first seven innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits with ten strikeouts and three walks. Beaird came on in relief and was charged with the loss while surrendering the winning run in the eighth inning.
