A late rally was not enough to overcome an early deficit as the Defenders dropped the opening game of a doubleheader against their rival Morningside by a 5-3 score.
The Mustangs’ Jordan Johnson (9-4) dealt a complete-game for the victory, while Sidney Larsen (5-12) took the pitching loss for the Defenders.
Morningside owned a comfortable early lead after a pair of two-run innings. In the first inning, Jordan Johnson drove a triple to center field that plated the game’s first run. Mackenzie Neely stepped up next and drove in Johnson with a sacrifice fly, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead before Dordt even stepped to the plate.
Morningside’s center fielder Shelby Feldt came up with a big two-out hit in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Feldt sent a looping line drive to left field that dropped perfectly between three Defenders. The knock drove in two more runs to put Morningside ahead 4-0.
After Morningside added a fifth run in the fourth inning, Dordt began chipping away at the lead. The Defenders scored once on a delayed double steal with runners on the corners. They scored again on a Brittany Kooiker RBI single to make it 5-2.
Both pitchers dodged trouble throughout the latter innings, which kept the score at 5-2 until the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff double by Chaundra Monical, Shantelle Gritters’ double drove in a run to make it 5-3. A walk to Ashton Beaird put the tying run on base, but Dordt’s four and five hitters Bethany Dykstra and Brittany Kooiker struck out to end the game.
The Defenders fell to 6-22 (2-9) while the Mustangs advanced their record to 17-9 (6-1).
