Dordt College Softball vs. College of Saint Mary
March 30, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender softball team overcame two deficits in winning an 10-7 decision over the College of Saint Mary Flames (Nebraska) on Friday evening in Sioux Center, Iowa. The win gave Dordt four victories this season over the Omaha, Nebraska based school and got the Defenders within two games of the .500 mark heading into the heart of the GPAC season.
Dordt gave up three runs in the first inning on a Shelbi Hatfield three-run homerun. Dordt responded immediately with Kaitlyn Lockhorst reaching on a bunt single and Paige Fynaardt followed with a single after Lockhorst stole second. Lockhorst scored on the play and Fynaardt advanced all the way to third on the throw. An Ashton Beaird fly ball to centerfield got a second run across and back to back hits by Kacy Oberfoell and Megan Huizenga got the Defenders to tied 3-3. A dropped fly ball in the outfield allowed Huizenga to reach for a 4-3 lead.
The Flames got two runs across in the third with Hatfield again clubbing a homerun, this time for two runs, for a 5-4 advantage. Five runs on five hits and two errors got the Defenders in front 9-5 after four innings and the lead looked comfortable. After an uneventful fifth, the Flames mounted an uprising that got them two runs to start the inning for a 9-7 difference and they had runners on second and third with no outs. Starting pitcher Sidney Larsen was replaced with Brittany Kooiker and Kooiker got out of the jam with ground out; a fly out to centerfield and a ground out to second base to leave the two runners stranded.
Dordt got one run across in the sixth for insurance and then got a double play to end the seventh when Oberfoell made a running snag in the alley in right-center and threw the runner out at second who left on contact.
Dordt outhit the visitors 11-9 with Lockhorst, Fynaardt, Beaird and Huizenga all getting two hits each. Fynaardt scored three runs and knocked in two and Ashton Beaird had two runs batted in. Huizenga had the lone extra base hit, a run scoring double.
Sidney Larson got the win in five-plus innings of work and allowed seven runs--four of them earned and struck out two. Brittany Kooiker got the save with two innings of relief and she allowed just one hit.
Dordt is now 12-14 overall and take a 2-2 GPAC mark into their games with Hastings on Saturday. The Flames, who had won six of seven games coming into the Dordt doubleheader, are now 6-14.
