Dordt College Softball vs. Midland-GPAC Tournament

(Sioux City, Iowa (SYA Softball Complex)) Midland earned a 10-5 win over the Dordt Defenders in a winner's bracket semifinal contest at the Great Plains Athletic Conference softball tournament in Sioux City on Thursday, May 5. The loss drops the Defenders into an elimination game on Friday at 2:00.
Midland got going right away with three runs in the first inning, capitalizing on a throwing error on what would have been the third out of the inning. Dordt fought back for two in the first with Megan Huizenga and Sarah Seymour each plating runs with hits.
Dordt allowed another run in the second and got that run back with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the second.
A scoreless third followed with Dordt tying the score in the fourth with Haley Huisman coming on a Chelsie Harris ground ball out to the right side of the infield.
The Warriors re-took the lead with a run in the sixth but the Defenders tied it in dramatic fashion with a homerun by Bethany Dykstra to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Sarah Seymour followed with a double and was run for. Back to back walks to Megan Huizenga and Kassandra Heynen loaded the bases with no one out but Midland worked out of the jam, getting a pair of fly ball outs and a strikeout to cap the frame.
Midland then took advantage of five hits and an error for five runs and the Defenders were retired with runners on first and second in the home half of the eighth, falling by the final of 10-5.
Dordt was outhit 17-10 and both teams stranded 13 baserunners. Amber Soodsma took the loss in relief, allowing six runs on eight hits with one strikeout in five innings. Amanda Nikkel pitched the first three innings and allowed four runs on nine hits.
Seymour had three hits with two doubles and a triple and scored a run and knocked in another. Bethany Dykstra and Amber Soodsma each had two hits with Dykstra knocking in one and scoring two with a homerun and a single.
Dordt will face Hastings in an elimination game on Friday, May 6 at 2:00 in Sioux City. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Morningside-Nebraska Wesleyan game also played at 2:00. The 4:00 winner's bracket game features Midland against Concordia with another elimination game scheduled for 6:00. The championship game of the tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at noon with a second championship game, if needed scheduled for 2:00.
