Dordt College Softball vs. Doane

(Sioux Center, Iowa) A three run homerun by Kassandra Heynen in the third inning gave the Defenders the lead for good in a 7-3 win for Dordt over the Doane Tigers on Friday night in Sioux Center. The win gave Dordt a sweep of the contest and allowed Dordt to finish the conference season with a 13-7 mark and a 17-14 overall record.
Dordt gave up one in the first but came up with one in the home half of the inning with Chelsie Harris scoring after a triple on an error on the Doane leftfielder on a fly ball hit by Bethany Dykstra. Dordt led briefly when they scored in the second on an Amber Soodsma single but a two run homerun by Shelby Mendlik put Doane up 3-2 heading to the bottom of the third.
Dordt erupted for five runs in the third, three on the homer by Heynen into a stiff south breeze and they two for insurance with Soodsma and Kaitlyn Lockhorst each knocking in runs.
Doane mounted a threat in the sixth when they loaded the bases but they came away with nothing and ended up losing 7-3.
Dordt was led by Soodsma's two hits and two runs batted in. Dykstra had two hits and a run scored and Fynaardt had two hits and two runs scored. Heynen got credit for the three runs batted in on her third homerun of the season.
Soodsma was the winning pitcher, allowing nine hits and striking out two with three bases on balls. Megan Wingate takes the loss for Doane and was charged with all seven runs.
Doane is 11-9 in the league heading into its games with Morningside on Saturday while Dordt is done with the regular season and will await its assignment in the GPAC post-season tournament which opens on Thursday, May 5 in Sioux City. Pairings will be released at the conclusion of conference play.
