Dordt College Softball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Fielding errors proved to be costly in the Dordt Defender softball loss to the Hastings Broncos on Friday night, April 8 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Dordt was never able to fully recover from allowing four runs in the third inning on the way to a 10-6 loss in game one of the doubleheader.
Dordt scored in the home half of the first inning when Paige Fynaardt singled and Sarah Seymour followed with a double that scored Fynaardt. Megan Huizenga followed with a single but Seymour was thrown out at the plate and Huizenga was later thrown out when she was caught stealing for the final out of the inning.
Hastings got four runs in the third inning on four hits and an error that resulted in four unearned runs. The Defenders got the score back to 4-2 on a Bethany Dykstra homerun, her first of the season in the fifth but the Defenders would open the door for Hastings in the sixth. The Broncos took advantage of three Dordt errors to score six unearned runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-2 lead.
Dordt cut the lead in half with a Bethany Dykstra sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and Ashley Viet tripled in two runs. Viet later scored on an error by Hastings, the only defensive miscue by the Broncos in the game.
Both teams were scoreless in the seventh.
Amanda Nikkel took the loss, allowing ten runs on 11 hits and struck out five with one walk issued. None of the runs she gave up were earned. Christine Lowe was the winning pitcher and allowed 11 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Sarah Seymour was 2-3 at the plate for Dordt with two doubles. Megan Huizenga and Paige Fynaardt each had two hits and Ashley Viet got credit for two hits. Dykstra got credit for two runs batted in and was 1-2 with a homerun. Hastings was led by Felicia Graff who was 3-4 with two runs scored. Rochelle Finnigan and Candice Connolly both had three runs batted in and two hits each.
