Dordt College Softball vs. Sioux Falls

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders fought from behind to force extra innings and then won the first game of a doubleheader with Sioux Falls on a walk-off homerun by Paige Fynaardt in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 7-6 win over the Cougars on Wednesday, April 6.
Dordt got two in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk and on an error. Three runs in the top of the second established Sioux Falls' first lead of the game. The Defenders got two more in the second inning to take the lead back with Amber Soodsma singling and Paige Fynaardt launched a homerun to leftfield for a 4-3 lead. After a scoreless third inning the Cougars scored three more for a 6-4 lead.
Dordt got one run back in the fourth inning on a Soodsma homerun with two outs to make it 6-5. Both teams went the next two innings without scoring. Dordt's Sarah Seymour sent one over the fence to tie the game at 6-6. Megan Huizenga and Bethany Dykstra each singled and gave way to pinch runners with no one out. Three straight outs ended the Dordt threat and the teams went to extra innings.
The Cougars went down in order in the top of the eighth. Kassandra Heynen nearly ended the game with a homerun to leftfield but that deep fly was caught. After a groundout for the second out of the inning Fynaardt came to the plate with the bases empty and promptly deposited one over the fence for a Dordt College 7-6 win.
Amanda Nikkel got the win while allowing six runs on ten hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Fynaardt's two homeruns led a 12 hit parade for the Defenders. All totaled Fynaardt was 4-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Soodsma was 3-4 with three runs scored and Huizenga had a pair of hits.
