Dordt College Softball vs. Midland (NE)

(Hastings, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender softball team fell into the loser's bracket of the GPAC tournament with a 3-2 loss to Midland Lutheran in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, May 6 in Hastings, Nebraska. The Defenders were unable to maintain a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before falling 3-2.
Dordt got on the board with a homerun by Amber Soodsma as the junior led the game off. The shot was Soodsma's second homerun of the season. Midland Lutheran got a run in the bottom of the third on a throwing error on a double that allowed the lead runner at third to score.
The Defenders responded with a run to retake the lead in the fourth when Kaitlyn Lockhorst singled and then was knocked in on a Dana Van Zee double to the gap. The lead held until the sixth when a solo homerun tied it and a triple with one out put the pressure on. An error by the Defenders got the lead run in and Dordt was retired in order in the seventh to end the game.
Dordt was outhit 6-5. Amber Soodsma and Dana Van Zee were both 2-3 with Soodsma getting a single and homerun and Van Zee had a double and single. Both got credit for a run batted in. Dordt's fifth hit was the single by Lockhorst.
Amber Soodsma took the loss after allowing six hits and struck out three while walking none. The only earned run Soodsma gave up was the solo homerun in the sixth.
Dordt will face Concordia in an elimination game at 6:00 Thursday.
