Dordt College Softball vs. Mount Marty

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Defender softball team picked up a sweep over Mount Marty this evening, defeating the Lancers 7-0 in game 2 after outscoring them 5-1 in the opener.

Dordt College improves to 15-17 overall and 11-9 in GPAC play with the pair of wins and Dordt pitchers Amber Soodsma and Amanda Nikkel both improve move their pitching records to .500 with Soodsma picking up her 8th win while Nikkel gets her 6th.

Neither team was able to put any runs across in the first 2 and a half innings before Dordt exploded for 6 runs on 7 hits in the bottom half of the 3rd. The inning was highlighted by a Sarah Seymour homerun, her second of the night, to go along with a double in game one. Haley Huismas started the inning off with an infield single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Becca Hengeveld followed up with an infield hit of her own to advance Huisman to third and Hengeveld then stole second and Huisman went home on the throw to second an the attempt to get Hengeveld. Amber Soodsma, who struggled at the plate in game 1, got an RBI single to center to score Hengeveld, putting Dordt up 2-0. Soodsma stole second before Paige Fynaardt flew out for the first out of the inning. With Soodsma on second, Seymour blasted a 2 RBI shot over the fence in right center field, giving the Defenders a 4-0 lead. Kassandra Heynen proceeded to drop a double into right field, which was followed up by a Megan Huizenga RBI triple into right, scoring Heynen for the 5-0 lead. Heynen, K doubled to right field. VerMulm flew out bringing up Kaitlyn Lockhorst who singled to left field for the RBI and a 6-0 lead.

Mount Marty managed only one hit off Dordt hurler Amanda Nikkel in the 4th and 5th inning and Dordt added an additional run in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 7-0 game as Sarah Seymour scored on an RBI single by Lockhorst.

The Lancers threatened to take away the Nikkel shut-out, picking up a pair of singles in the inning, and Mount Marty had runners on second and third before Nikkel forced a ground out to end the inning unscathed.

Erica Loutsch had the loss on the mound for the Lancers giving up 10 hits and all 7 Dordt runs were earned. Nikkel gave up 6 hits and had 2 strike-outs in the win for Dordt College.

The Defenders move to 6th place in the GPAC with the two wins.
