Dordt College Softball vs. Concordia

(Sioux Center, Iowa) After picking up GPAC double header sweeps against Northwestern (Tuesday) and Dana (Wednesday)this week, it would be the Defenders getting swept today as the Concordia Bulldogs improved to 9-9 in the GPAC by beating Dordt 13-2 in game one before knocking off the Defenders 6-1 in the second session.

After pitching the first 5 innings in game 1, Nicole Sempek pitched all 7 innings for the Bulldogs in game 2 to pick up her second win on the afternoon and her 18th of the year. Amanda Nikkel picked up the pitching loss and is now 5-6 on the year.

Neither team was able to score in the first two innings with Dordt's Amanda Nikkel retiring the first 6 batters she faced in the contest. Concordia picked up 3 runs in the top half of the third inning on 4 hits, a Dordt error and left two runners on base.

The Defenders were unable to get a base runner in the bottom half of the third and Nikkel struck out her fourth and fifth batters of the night to get out of the top half of the 4th unscathed. Dordt's lone run came in the bottom of the 4th when Megan Huizenga got on base with a two out single. Huizenga moved to second on a VerMulm walk and scored on an RBI single by Kaitlyn Lockhorst.

Concordia scored two more runs in the 5th and another in the 6th while the Defenders were only able to muster one hit over the final 3 frames, falling 6-1 to Concordia.

Sempek gave up one earned run while giving up 5 hits while striking out 5 Dordt batters and walking two. Amanda Nikkel gave up 6 runs on 11 hits while striking out seven with no walks, Dordt also committed 4 errors.

The Defenders entered the two game set in 5th place in the GPAC and dropped to a tie for 6th with Concordia who moved up from the 8th spot with the two victories.

Dordt College will host Briar Cliff on Monday, April 26 in a GPAC doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm in Open Space Park in Sioux Center, Iowa.
