Dordt College Softball vs. Concordia
April 22, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt and Concordia entered game 1 of their double header seemingly headed in opposite directions, with Dordt winning their last 4 games while the Bulldogs were on a 7 game losing streak. Behind the strength of solid pitching and a 5 run second inning, the Bulldogs snapped both streaks, taking game one from the Defenders by a score of 13-2.
Nicole Sempek, who pitched the first 5 innings in the win for Concordia, picked up her 16th win of the season and only has 5 losses in 21 decisions. Concordia improves to 8-9 in the GPAC while Dordt is now 9-8 in conference, with Amber Soodsma picking up the loss on the mound for the Defenders.
Dordt College got on the scoreboard first when Amber Soodsma got on with a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third when Seymour flew out to center. Kassandra Heynen drove in Soodsma with an RBI single to center field to give Dordt the 1-0 lead after the first inning.
The lead was short lived for the Defender women as the first 5 batters for Concordia all ended up scoring in the top half of the second to take a 5-1 lead. Concordia added two more runs in the third, one in the 5th and one in the 6th to take a 9-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth. Dordt avoided having the 8 run rule invoked on them when Megan Huizenga's two-out double scored Sarah Seymour from 2nd to make it 9-2.
Concordia exploded for 4 more runs in the top of the 7th including a lead off homer by Laura Fugate who went 4 for 5 with two runs scored. Dordt was unable to pick up any additional runs in the bottom half of the 7th.
Sempek gave up only one hit and one earned run in 5 complete innings, while Caitlin Lawrence, who pitched the final two innings gave up one run on 3 hits. Sempek came into the game with almost a 10 to 1 strike-out to walk ratio but was only able to strike-out 3 Dordt batters while surrendering 3 walks. Dordt's Amber Soodsma struck out 8 Bulldog batters while walking 3 and giving up 8 earned runs.
