Dordt College Softball vs. Midland (NE)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College lost a 2-1, 10 inning battle with Midland Lutheran in game one of their doubleheader in softball Saturday afternoon.
The Defenders got on the board with a Megan Huizenga homerun in the second inning but Midland Lutheran answered with a run in the third to tie it. The teams played the next six innings in scoreless fashion with Midland Lutheran breaking through with a run in the tenth when they capitalized on the tiebreaker rule that puts a runner on second to start the inning. The Warriors scored with out the benefit of a hit to take the lead.
Dordt had a chance to tie it in the tenth but failed to get the run across when Becca Hengeveld was cut down at home plate for the second out of the inning when she tried to score from third on a grounder. Dordt was unable to tie the game and lost by the final of 2-1.
Dordt outhit the visitors 5-4 with Kassandra Heynen going 2-4. Huizenga had her solo homerun and Dana Van Zee and Becca Hengeveld each accounted for a hit. Amber Soodsma took the loss while allowing four hits, two runs--neither of which were earned, walked two and struck out three. Emily Sladek took the win for Midland Lutheran with a nine strikeout performance.
