Dordt College Softball vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt women were unable to pick up the sweep in Crete, Nebraska as they lost the second game of their doubleheader with Doane by a score of 7-6 in eight innings after winning the first contest 12-6. The Defenders are now 9-11 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Jennifer Liddell picked up the win for the Tigers while giving up 10 Dordt hits while Amanda Nikkel took the loss with Doane getting 14 hits.
Dordt took a big lead early, knocking in 4 runs in the top half of the first inning on 4 hits and one Doane error while stranding 3 runners on base. Lockhorst got the inning started with a walk but Dordt's next two batters got out while Lockhorst advanced to third. An RBI single by Sarah Seymour brought Lockhorst in and started a two out rally for the Defenders. Kassandra Heynen singles to right field advancing Seymour to third. Megan Huizenga singled bringing in Seymour and moving Heynen to second. A double steal brought Heynen to third and Huizenga to second, a Vermulm walk loaded the bases for Dordt. Haley Huisman reached on an error allowing both Heynen and Huizenga to score to put Dordt up 4-0. A Becca Hengeveld single loaded the bases again but Lockhorst struck out to end the inning. Doane was able to get one run back in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 4-1 Dordt lead.
Neither team was able to do any damage in innings 2 and 3 but Doane added two more runs in the bottom of the 4th to make it a 4-3 game and an additional run in the bottom of the 5th tied it at 4-4.
The Defenders were unable to get a hit in either inning 6 or 7 while Doane managed a lone hit in the 6th and another in the 7th.
With the scored tied 4-4 the second half of the twin bill went to extra innings. Again it would take a two out rally for Dordt to get some offense going as Becca Hengeveld got things started with a two out single to the shortstop. A Lockhorst walk put runners at first and second and a triple by Carla VanderWoude drove in two runs. Amber Soodsma flew out to end the top half of the inning. Doane's Falciani reached on a Dordt error and a Cardoza single put runners at first and second. Amanda Nikkel then struck out the third batter before giving up a 2 RBI double to Hochstein. With one out and a runner at second Whitney Poole singled Nikkel's first offering into left center to knock in the game winning run.
Becca Hengeveld (3-4), Sarah Seymour (2-4), and Kassandra Heynen (2-4) all had multiple hit nights.
The Defender women will travel to Sioux City on Tuesday, April 13 for a GPAC doubleheader with the first game scheduled for a 5:00 pm start.
