Dordt College Softball vs. Doane

(Crete, Nebraska) In spite of being outhit 13-10, the opportunistic Defender women doubled the run totoal of the Doane Tigers in taking the first half of this evening's doubleheader 12-6.
Doane picked up the only run of the first inning when Brooke Sampson drove in Whitney Poole. Dordt picked up two run in the second with the first coming via a solo shot by Sarah Seymour. Kassandra reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Huizenga ground out moved Heynen to third and a VerMulm single up the middle brought in Heynen.
Doane reclaimed the lead with 4 runs in the bottom half of the second inning to make it 5-2 but Dordt answered back with 4 runs in teh top of the third to take a one run lead at 6-5. The 4 Dordt runs came on only 2 hits and one Doane error with Wingate struggling at the mound, recording a walk, a wild pitch and hitting one Dordt batter. Lockhorst and VanderWoude had the two hits for the Defenders.
Doane tied the game at 6 with a run in the bottom of the fourth and neither team were able to put any across in the 5th. Dordt added 2 runs in the 6th and 4 more in the 7th while holding the Tigers scoreless in the final 3 innings.
Carla VanderWoude and Amber Soodsma each had 3 hits for Dordt while Kaitlyn Lockhorst had 2 with Sarah Seymour and Jaclyn Ver Mulm adding one each.
Dordt is now 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the GPAC while Doane moves to 14-12 overall and 6-5 in the conference. Amber Soodsma picked up the win, improving her record to 5-5 on the year while Megan Wingate took the loss and was removed in the top of the 6th.
