Dordt College Softball vs. Mayville State
March 30, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) Mayville State salvaged the final game of a four game set with Dordt in softball action and won 4-3 in the second game of the doubleheader on Tuesday, March 30. The Comets played error free softball in winning their fifth game of the season.
Dordt was playing from behind most of the game after surrendering a run in the first and another in the fourth. The Defenders came up with two runs in the home half of the fourth when Carla Vander Woude and Sarah Seymour reached on a single and a double. Megan Huizenga then delivered a two out double that tied the game. Mayville State retook the lead with a run in the fifth and Dordt answered with Amber Soodsma getting across after doubling and scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Comets had an answer again and took a 4-3 lead with a run in the seventh but Dordt looked primed to answer. A leadoff triple by Jaclyn Ver Mulm put the Defenders in good position to tie it but a strikeout followed by a Hengeveld reaching on a dropped third strike followed by another strikeout put runners on second and third with two outs. The Defenders couldn't get the timely hit and left the runners stranded.
Dordt's Amber Soodsma took the loss, working the final inning and third in relief of Brittany Kooiker. Soodsma was 2-3 a the plate with a pair of doubleds and four other players had one hit each.
Dordt will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Thursday at 5:00 in conference softball.
