Dordt College Softball vs. Doane-GPAC Tournament

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt Defenders bounced back from their first round loss to Morningside at the GPAC softball tournament held in Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday to take a 6-5 win over the Doane Tigers in an elimination game at the SYA Softball Complex.
Dordt got on the board in the first inning when Jaclyn Ver Mulm singled in Kristin Santana. Dordt took a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly by Kassandra Heynen to knock in Sarah Visser.
Doane answered with four runs in the bottom half the inning and the 4-2 score held until Dordt got two in their half of the fifth.
Becca Hengeveld singled and advanced on an error. A double play line drive with the bases loaded took a runner off first base but Megan Huizenga delivered a two-out double to tie the game. Dordt then took the lead when Amanda Nikkel doubled to lead off the sixth and Dana Van Zee ran for her and scored on an error. The Defenders made it 6-4 with a Sarah Visser rbi single that scored Jaclyn Ver Mulm after she originally reached on a single. Doane threatened and got one run in but stranded the tying and winning run on base in the seventh inning.
Dordt was led by Ver Mulm and Visser who were both 3-4 at the plate with a run batted in for each. Hengeveld was 1-4 with a run scored and Nikkel was 2-4. Dordt outhit the Tigers 10-7.
Amber Soodsma got the win in relief after working five innings and allowing three hits and one run with five strikeouts. Sarah Visser started the game and went two innings with four hits allowed, one walk and two strikeouts.
