Dordt College Softball vs. Doane

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender softball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take their third conference win of the season, a 7-6 decision over the Doane Tigers in a game played in Sioux City, Iowa. The games were part of a revamped Morningside Softball Invite and will count in the conference standings, taking the place of a pair of games scheduled in Sioux Center, Iowa on April 25.

Dordt scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead. Megan Huizenga singled and Jaclyn Ver Mulm kept the pressure on with a base rap. Dorinda Hibma also delivered a base hit. Through the course of the inning two runs scored on errors and Amber Soodsma delivered the big blow, a bases loaded triple. Dordt had five runs on four hits in the frame.

Meanwhile Doane fought back to take a brief lead, scoring four in the fifth to hold a 6-5 advantage. Dordt answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie it on a walk to Sarah Seymour with the bases loaded. Dordt got a walk from Jaclyn Ver Mulm in the seventh to get the go ahead run on the bases but an Amanda Nikkel bunt resulted in the lead runner getting taken off the basepaths. With Nikkel on first base Melissa Ver Haar put the ball in play and the Doane centerfielder misplayed the ball, resulting in Nikkel racing home from first on the error.

Amber Soodsma was rewarded with the win for Dordt after allowing nine hits, six runs--all earned and she walked two with four strikeouts. Rale Hingst took the loss in relief for Doane.

Dordt was outhit 9-7 with Soodsma going 3-3 with three runs batted in and Nikkel reached twice by walk. Hibma was 2-4 with a run scored.

Dordt is now 3-5 in the league and 6-16 overall while Doane is 4-2 and 7-9. Dordt will host Morningside on Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00.
