Dordt College Softball vs. William Penn

(Cedar Falls--UNI Dome) The Dordt College Defender softball team bounced back for a 6-5 win over William Penn on Saturday night in game two of a doubleheader played at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Defenders took the lead with four runs in the first and held off a William Penn rally in the top of the seventh for their first win of the season.
A pair of walks and a single by Dorinda Hibma loaded the bases and a Megan Huizenga single knocked in a run. A walk to Sarah Visser made it 2-0 and Kristin Santana worked her way on for a walk as well for the third run of the inning. Kaitlyn Lockhorst capped the inning with a single that scored Huizenga for a 4-0 lead.
William Penn struck for four runs on four hits in the second inning and the teams played scoreless softball for the third and fourth innings. Dordt broke the tie with two runs in the fifth when Jaclyn Ver Mulm singled and was doubled in by Amanda Nikkel. A Kristin Santana groundout scored Nikkel from third later in the inning and Dordt led 6-4.
William Penn scored one run in the seventh inning but stranded the tying run at third after doing all their damage with two outs.
Amanda Nikkel allowed ten hits in the win and gave up five runs--four of them earned with two strikeouts. VerMulm had two hits with two runs scored. Amanda Nickkel had a double, a run scored and a run knocked in and Kristin Santana managed to knock in two runs without a hit to her credit. Hibma and Lockhorst had Dordt's two other hits. Dordt was outhit 10-5 and won despite committing three errors.
Dordt is 1-1 and will play next in the Hastings Invite on March 6 and 7 in Hastings, Nebraska.
