Dordt College Softball vs. Dakota State
April 23, 2009
(Madison, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender softball team made it a season sweep of the Dakota State Trojans on Thursday night with a 9-8 win in the fourth meeting this season of the two teams.
Dordt scored six in the fourth and then held on as Dakota State scored four in the bottom of the seventh before being retired with the tying run at third and the winning run at first.
Dordt scored in the first when Sarah Seymour plated Becca Hengeveld with a double. Hengeveld reached on a walk with two outs in the inning to start the threat. Dordt's six runs in the fourth came when Megan Huizenga doubled and Sarah Visser walked. An error allowed Nikkel to reach and a run scored. Then, with two outs in the inning, Dordt strung together a Hengeveld double, a Soodsma single, a Seymour single and a passed ball that scored a total of five more runs. Trailing 7-2, Dakota State got two in the sixth but the Defenders seemed to have the game in hand with two more in the seventh. Dordt scored when Huizenga singled in a run and a ground out by Sarah Visser got Sarah Seymour in from third. As it turned out, the Defenders needed every one of those runs with Dakota State getting four runs in the seventh before Amber Soodsma came on in relief to record the final out of the game with the tying run 60 feet away.
Nikkel got the win in five and 2/3 innings while allowing 10 hits, four runs--two of them earned and struck out two. Visser pitched an inning of relief but wasn't involved in the decision. Soodsma retired the one batter she faced and got the save.
Dordt was out hit 15-7 with Huizenga going 3-4 with a run batted in and a double. Sarah Seymour was 2-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Hengeveld got two runs in as well while scoring a pair.
