Dordt College Softball vs. Mount Marty

(Yankton, South Dakota) Dordt made it a sweep of the Mount Marty Lancers in Great Plains Athletic Conference softball Tuesday night in Yankton with a 9-6 win in game two of their twin bill. Dordt had to hold the Lancers off in the closing innings for their 12th win of the conference season.

Mount Marty scored one in the first but the Defenders got that run back in the second when Jaclyn Ver Mulm scored from third on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt behind her at second base. Dordt took the lead for good on two runs in the third when Kristin Santana singled and Amber Soodsma had a single. Sarah Seymour doubled in a run with and Soodsma eventually scored in the frame as well.

The Defenders made it 7-1 with four runs in the fifth inning with Seymour again striking for a scoring blow on a single that scored two runs. Ver Mulm and Dorinda Hibma both singled in runs in the inning as well. Ver Mulm figured into the scoring in the seventh. Mount Marty scored two in the sixth to make it 7-3 but Dordt scored two more in the seventh when Ver Mulm doubled and Mizza Ver Haars singled. Sarah Visser reached on an error to get the second run of the inning across. Mount Marty made it interesting with three runs in the seventh and Amber Soodsma came on to get the final out, preserving the victory for Visser on the mound.

Visser got the win in 6 and 2/3 innings with nine hits, six runs allowed and six strikeouts against one walk. Santana, Soodsma, Seymour and Ver Mulm all had two hits with Ver Mulm scoring three and Seymour knocked in three. Visser had a double while Ver Haar, Amanda Nikkel and Dorinda Hibma all accounted for singles in Dordt's 13 hit attack.

Dordt is now 17-19 overall and 12-8 in the conference. Dordt has won 11 of their last 13 games. Mount Marty slides to 2-26 overall and 1-17 in the league. Dordt will travel to Midland Lutheran on Wednesday before going to Madison, South Dakota on Thursday for a non-conference date with Dakota State.
