Dordt College Softball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender softball team earned a split of their doubleheader with Morningside on Wednesday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders scored for in the first inning with two outs and held on for the 4-3 win.
Morningside got one run across in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. Dordt's first two batters were retired without incident before Amber Soodsma singled. A Sarah Seymour base hit kept the rally alive and Jaci Ver Mulm tied the game with a soft shot to centerfield. With Seymour on second and Ver Mulm on first Megan Huizenga laced a line drive homerun over the left field fence to five Dordt a 4-1 lead.
Moringside got two runs back in the fifth but ran themselves out of a potentially bigger inning when Kendra Klein was caught in a rundown after a fly out to rightfield. Klein was tagged out for the third out of the inning.
Amber Soodsma was the winning pitcher, going the distance for her fourth win of the season. The sophomore allowed seven hits, two earned runs, walked one and struck out five. Soodsma, Seymour, Becca Hengeveld, Sarah Visser and Kristin Santana all had singles and Huizenga's homerun was the only extra base hit for the Defenders.
Morningside's Morgan Swanson took the loss while allowing the four runs with five hits and she struck out one. Kelly Baumert, the winner in game one, pitched the final two innings and struck out five for no-decision. Kendra Klein, Brandi Burke and Jerra Steffen all had two hits.
Dordt is 4-6 in the league and 7-17 overall while Morningside is 5-1 in the GPAC and 15-12 overall. Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night beginning at 5:00 in conference play.
