Dordt College Softball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt Defender softball team lost a hard-fought 3-2, 11 inning decision to the Briar Cliff Chargers in the second game of their Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, March 25.
Dordt struck for a run in the first when Sarah Seymour singled in Amber Soodsma. Soodsma initially reached on an error and stole second to get in scoring position.
Briar Cliff answered with two unearned runs in the second inning for a 2-1 lead that stood until the fourth when Seymour belted a homerun. The Defenders ended up stranding another runner in the inning and the 2-2 tie stood through the regulation seven innings. The two teams battled through three more scoreless innings with Dordt getting a runner as far as third in three of the four extra frames, but couldn't shove the runner in. Briar Cliff got the winning run across with two outs in the eleventh inning after the second out was recorded on a tag play at home plate on the previous play.
Amber Soodsma pitched 10 2/3 innings and allowed three runs--one of them earned, struck out 13 and walked one while scattering ten hits. Seymour was 3-5 with two runs batted in and Dorinda Hibma was 2-4. Jaclyn Ver Mulm also had a hit for the Defenders in the loss.
Briar Cliff's Camille Cruz got the win in relief, pitching the final six innings of scoreless softball while allowing two hits and struck out eight.
Dordt is 5-14 overall and 2-4 in the GPAC while Briar Cliff is 8-6 and 3-1. Dordt is scheduled to play in the Morningside Classic this Friday and Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.
