Dordt College Softball vs. Mount Marty

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender softball team lost an 8-4, 10 inning decision to Mount Marty in game one of their doubleheader played in Sioux Center, Iowa on Wednesday, April 23. The Defenders were done in by nine errors, four of them in the top of the tenth in dropping a game that was tied 3-3 at the end of seven innings.
Dordt scored in the first when Melissa Ver Haar knocked in Becca Hengeveld after Hengeveld singled to lead off the inning. Mount Marty came back with a run of their own in the top of the second for a 1-1 tie.
The two teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Kassandra Heynen plated Soodsma with a single and then later scored when she stole second and came around to score on a throwing error by Mount Marty. Dordt allowed the first Mount Marty batter to reach on an error in the top of the seventh and with two outs, Kat Kirby went to rightfield for a homerun that tied the game with a pair of unearned runs. After a scoreless eighth and ninth, the international tiebreak rule came into effect and Mount Marty capitalized, pushing five runs across in the top of the tenth with a runner starting at second base to put the pressure on. The Lancers took advantage of four Dordt errors in the frame to take an 8-3 lead that held up with the Defenders getting one run across in the tenth on a Ver Haar double that scored Suzi Butier.
Amber Soodsma took the loss with 12 strikeouts and ten hits allowed. Three of the runs she allowed were earned. Amanda Kneifl gets the win, scattering eight hits and strikint out four with four walks. Melissa Ver Haar was 2-4 with a double and two runs batted in while Becca Hengeveld was 2-5 with a run scored. Sarah Seymour walked twice and Soodsma was 2-5.
