Dordt College Softball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender softball team lost a six inning 18-9 decision at Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 22, suffering a GPAC sweep at the hands of the Mitchell, South Dakota based school.
The Defenders started swiftly, scoring five in the top of the fifth with Amber Soodsma knocking in a pair with a single and Amanda Nikkel plated three with a bases loaded double. Wesleyan got two runs back immediately in the bottom of the first but trailed 7-2 when Dordt got two in the top of the fourth on a Kassandra Heynen two run homerun.
Wesleyan came back with three in the fourth to tie it but Dordt got right back on top with two in the fifth inning when Becca Hengeveld scored on a fielder's choice and Nikkel scored on a Kristin Santana grounder.
The floodgates opened though in the bottom of the fifth when Wesleyan scored 11 runs on ten hits. Wesleyan than ended the game with a pair of runs in the sixth inning--invoking the eight run rule difference.
Dordt had eight hits with Hengeveld getting two with two runs scored and a double. Nikkel was 2-3 with three runs batted in and Heynen and Soodsma both had a hit with Heynen belting the homerun and Soodsma the run scoring single in the first. Sarah Visser started on the mound and went four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Carissa Hondred takes the loss, relieving in the fifth and got charged with ten runs. Nikkel finished the game for Dordt. Valerie Spencer was the winning pitcher with nine runs scored on eight hits and three strikeouts.
Dordt falls to 4-26 and 1-15 while Wesleyan is 13-18 and 8-12 overall.
Dordt is scheduled to host Mount Marty on Wednesday before traveling to Dana in Blair, Nebraska on Friday.
