Dordt College Softball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender softball team lost a 4-3 eight inning decision at Mitchell, South Dakota, Tuesday, April 22 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action. The Defenders missed a late opportunity to take the lead and surrendered a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game.
Dordt got two in the first inning when Becca Hengeveld tripled and scored on a ground-out. Sarah Seymour followed with a solo homerun for the 2-0 lead. Wesleyan got on the board with one in the third but Dordt built the cushion up to two with a run in the fifth when Seymour doubled and Jaclyn Ver Mulm knocked her in with a single.
Wesleyan tied the score with a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Dordt missed an opportunity to take the lead in the visitor's half of the sixth inning when they left the bases loaded and Amy Torgerson, Dakota Wesleyan's starting pitcher, ended the game with a solo homerun to open the bottom of the eighth frame.
Dordt's Amber Soodsma took the loss, pitching seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Amy Torgerson gave up three runs while scattering 11 hits and struck out nine for the win.
Soodsma was 3-4 at the plate and Sarah Seymour was 2-2 with two runs scored. Becca Hengeveld had a single and a triple and Ver Mulm knocked in one with a pair of singles. Sarah Visser accounted for a double in three at-bats.
