Dordt College Softball vs. Concordia

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Concordia Bulldogs scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead and then scored five more in the seventh to take a 10-3 win over the Dordt Defenders in GPAC softball play at Sioux Center, Iowa on Saturday, April 19. Dordt held a 3-2 lead through five innings against the top team in the GPAC this season.
Dordt scored in the first inning when Mizza Ver Haar doubled and Sarah Seymour delivered a two-out double for a 1-0 lead. Concordia led briefly when they scored two in the second but the Defenders struck back when Becca Hengeveld singled and Ver Haar sacrificed her over. Seymour then came through again, this time with a single that scored the speedy Hengeveld from second base. Dordt took the lead with a run in the fourth when Kassandra Heynen belted her second double of the day and Amanda Nikkel followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Rashelle Wilson then dropped a bunt down that scored Heynen. Concordia got three in the sixth for the lead and then put the game out of reach with five more in the top of the seventh inning.
Both teams had nine hits but Dordt had five errors--accounting for seven unearned runs. Amber Soodsma takes the loss after giving up nine hits, ten runs--three of them earned an walked one with 10 strikeouts in six and a third innings of pitching. Carissa Hondred recorded the final two outs of the seventh inning.
Hengeveld had two hits and Seymour had a double and single with two runs batted in. Heynen had two doubles and was 2-2 at the plate. VerHaar, Nikkel and Suzi Butier account for Dordt's other three hits.
