Dordt College Softball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Briar Cliff Charger softball team beat Dordt College in game one of their doubleheader on Wednesday night, April 16 in Sioux Center, Iowa by a final score of 7-2. Briar Cliff scored in four of the first five innings to gain a cushion and Dordt's late rally wasn't enough as they fell to 1-10 in the GPAC.
Briar Cliff got two across in the first inning and one more in the second for a 3-0 lead. Another run came for the visitors in the fourth and they tacked on three more in the top of the fifth--two of them unearned before Dordt struck back.
Amanda Nikkel connected for a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth and Sarah Visser later walked and came around to score in the same frame to make it 7-2.
The Defenders had baserunners again in the sixth inning but couldn't get any more runs across against Briar Cliff starter Camille Cruz.
Becca Hengeveld had a 3-3 day at the plate with three singles while Sarah Seymour, Amber Soodsma and Nikkel accounted for the other three Dordt hits. Carissa Hondred took the loss in allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and two strike outs--two of the runs were earned. Soodsma relieved and went three innings and allowed two hits.
