Dordt College Softball vs. Hastings
April 20, 2007
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender softball team squandered a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning in dropping a 5-2 decision to the Hastings College Broncos on Friday in the first of their two games in conference play.
The Defenders struck for two runs in the first inning when Jaclyn Ver Mulm singled, Amanda Pothoven walked and Amber Daane singled to load the bases for Tessa Prins. Prins dropped a pop fly onto the outfield grass for a double, scoring two runs, the only runs and hits the Defenders would get in the game.
The Defenders, meanwhile, were dodging trouble for the first four innings, forcing Hastings to strand four batters.
The Broncos did get one across in the fifth and then plated four unearned runs in the seventh, helped by a wild pitch, two walks and two Dordt College errors.
Tessa Prins took the loss in relief, surrendering three runs on one walk, one hit and two strikeouts. Sarah Visser pitched six plus innings, leaving the game with a runner on and no one out in the top of the seventh with a 2-1 lead. Daane, Prins and Ver Mulm had Dordt's three hits. Stacy Paladino got the win for the Broncos allowing two runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking five.
Dordt drops to 5-21 overall and 2-11 in the conference while Hastings is 13-17 and 6-9.
