Dordt College Softball vs. Newman

(Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) The Dordt College Defender softball team earned their first win of the 2007 season with a 5-1 win over the Newman Jets at the Oklahoma City University tournament this afternoon in their second game of pool play.
Bouncing back from an earlier loss to Oklahoma Christian, the Defenders gave up one run in the second inning but tied the game in the sixth when Jaclyn Ver Mulm doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Amber Daane.
The Defenders took the lead in the seventh when Melissa Ver Haar walked and Amanda Pothoven followed with a homerun for a 3-1 lead. Dordt pushed two more across when Mandy Visser singled and Ver Mulm followed with a walk and both runners scored on a Tessa Prins double for two runs batted in.
Prins got the win, allowing three hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out one. Six different Defenders each had a hit. Ver Haar was 1-3 with a run scored, Pothoven was 1-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Mandy Visser was 1-3 and Ver Mulm was 1-3 with two runs scored. Prins was 1-2 with her two run double and also walked twice while Liz De Vries was 1-3 with a single.
Dordt is 1-5 and will face an opponent to be determined at the conclusion of pool play.
