Dordt College Softball vs. College of St. Mary
March 30, 2007
(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders forced extra innings after falling behind 3-0 after a half inning to the College of Saint Mary Flames but couldn't pull out the win in falling 5-4 at the Morningside Tournament in Sioux City.
The Flames pushed three earned runs across in the top of the first but the Defenders answered back immediately with two runs in their half of the frame with Jackie Ver Mulm knocking in Melissa Ver Haar and Mandy Visser with a double. Ver Haar had tripled and Visser walked to set the stage for the two-bagger. Dordt tied the game in the fourth when Liz De Vries singled and Tessa Prins sacrificed her over. Whitney Vander Plaats then delivered a triple to knot the score.
After a scoreless fifth, sixth and seventh, the two teams went to the extra frame and the Flames struck first with two runs. Dordt answered back with Amanda Pothoven knocking in a run with the international tie-breaker in effect, but was stranded at first, ending the 5-4 decision.
"We had some well hit balls that didn't drop in," said Dordt coach Brian Kroeze. "We just couldn't get the timely hit. We did do well to come back after giving up those three runs in the first inning."
Pothoven had three hits in the loss with a run batted in while Ver Mulm was 1-4 with two rbi's. De Vries, Ver Haar and Vander Plaats accounted for the other Dordt hits. Prins takes the loss after working eight full innings while giving up five runs--four of which were earned with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Dordt is now 2-8 while the Flames are 7-5 after entering the weekend 6-5.
