Dordt College Softball vs. Dakota State

(Vermillion, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defenders dropped game one of their non-conference doubleheader with Dakota State in softball action at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, South Dakota.
Playing in what has been dubbed a "Winter in April" weekend, the Defenders scored a run in the first but surrendered the lead in the bottom of the inning and ended up trailing 6-1 after four frames. Dordt got two runs back in the fifth but allowed another two in the bottom of the inning and another in the sixth. Dordt did plate four in the seventh but couldn't complete the comeback, falling by a 9-7 final.
Dordt banged out 11 hits to Dakota State's 13 with Amanda Pothoven belted a single and a double with two runs scored and Jaclyn VerMulm was 2-4 as well with two runs batted in and a run scored with a stolen base. Liz De Vries was 2-4 with a homerun and a double and three runs batted in while Mandy Visser had a two run double and scored two runs.
Carissa Van Gorp took the loss, allowing 11 hits, eight runs--all of them earned and walked four while striking out one. Tessa Prins pitched the final inning and was touched for one run and two hits.
Dordt is now 3-11 while Dakota State improved to 11-12 heading into game two of the doubleheader.
