The Dordt Defender women dropped a 1-0 double-overtime thriller to Friends University (Kan.) on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Dordt – still winless on the season – stayed with Friends for the entire game and even played with an extra player for the final 21 minutes. However, an Emma Cuda breakaway goal with three minutes remaining in double overtime gave the Falcons the victory.

The Defenders tallied seven shots on goal, including several excellent attempts in overtime, but they couldn’t beat sophomore goalie Shea Poynter.

The Falcons were forced to play a woman down after Maddie Behney received a red card in the 86th minute. It appeared as if the Defenders would be able to manage a draw, at worst, but junior Bella McCorvey sent a ball past the Dordt defense in the 107th minute that Cuda tracked down and shot past keeper Katie Kortman for the win.

Poynter recorded her second shutout of the season as Friends moved to 4-3-0. Dordt College fell to 0-5-0.

The Defenders will play at Buena Vista University on Tuesday.
