Dordt College Women's Soccer vs. Morningside--GPAC Playoffs-Semifinal Round
November 8, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt women defeated Morningside 2-1 this afternoon to earn a spot in the GPAC finals on Thursday, November 13.
On a cold, windy day and on a field that was covered in snow and a thin layer of ice a good number of loyal fans came out to watch this GPAC semi-final match played in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Dordt got on the scoreboard first in the 27th minute when Lindsay Landhuis (FR, Denver, Colorado) sent a great ball across from the right side that Rindy DeNooy (FR, Sioux Center,IA) buried in the back of the Morningside goal. The lead was extended to 2-0 when Morningside put an own goal in the back of their net in the 31st minute.
The Defenders had numerous chances in the second half but were unable to increase their lead, then in the 67th minute Morningside's Maggie Kukuk scored to cut the lead in half. Although there were some anxious moments for the Defenders in the second half the score ended with Dordt on top 2-1.
The NAIA gives automatic tournament berths to the regular season champ (Dordt) and the play-off champ. If the same team wins both then the play-off runner up goes through, therefore the win by Dordt assures that the semi-final winner between Dana and Hastings will make the NAIA tournament.
Jenna Noteboom (FR, Ireton, Iowa) had 2 saves in goal for Dordt.
The soccer team would like to express their thanks to Mr. Stan Haak, Mr. Rick VanderBerg and Coach Klein for all their time and effort in making the field more playable and our loyal fans for braving the elements to cheer us on.
Dordt will next play at home against either Dana or Hastings on Thursday, November 13 in Sioux Center.
