(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's soccer team earned a 2-1 double overtime win in non-conference play over the Briar Cliff Chargers on Wednesday, September 3 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The two teams battled for nearly 89 scoreless minutes before breaking through late in the game.
Dordt scored the first goal of the game at the 88:26 mark when Kelly Smies (freshman; Oostburg, Wisconsin) sent a crossing pass in front of the goal that Noelle Kreykes (sophomore; St. John, Indiana) headed past the Briar Cliff keeper for what looked like the game winner. Briar Cliff was able to quickly re-group and beat a drawn up Defenders' defense at the 89:37 mark to tie it on a Jen Schmaderer goal.
After a scoreless overtime session the Defenders finally broke through on a unassisted goal by Kate Du Mez (junior; Brookfield, Wisconsin) from well outside the 21 yard line at the 107:52 mark to win it.
Jenna Noteboom (freshman; Ireton, Iowa) recorded two saves in the win while Briar Cliff's Courtney Bahney took the loss and made four saves.
The win was Dordt's first in two tries while Briar Cliff is winless in three games and stand 0-1 in the GPAC with that loss coming to Dana last weekend. Dordt will host York (Nebraska) on Friday, September 12 in their next outing.
