The Defender men dropped their GPAC conference opener with a 3-1 loss to Midland (Neb.) on Saturday.

The Warriors got on the board early with two goals in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore Adam Wood scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute to break the ice. Freshman Sam Blackman made the score 2-0 four minutes later with a header past junior goalie Jon Brinkerhoff.

Dordt fought their way back as senior Eric Grootenboer wove through defenders and sent a low shot past junior goalie Lewis Wilcox in the 28th minute. Dordt had the momentum as the game went to halftime, but couldn’t manage to equalize.

Midland distanced itself from Dordt with a 57th-minute goal from freshman Ali Sodal. The Warriors’ 3-1 lead held up for the duration of the game as Dordt only took six shots on goal in the contest.

Dordt’s record dropped to 2-7-0, while Midland improved to 8-1-1.

The Defenders will play at Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1.
