The Defenders took out some early-season frustration with a 4-0 rout over Friends University (Kan.) on Saturday.
Dordt College shut out Friends 4-0, notching their first win of the year despite missing three starters due to injury.
With Cameron Stuive (hamstring), Ryan Couperus (leg), and Derick Sackey (concussion) sidelined, the Defenders scored two goals in each half to cruise past the Falcons. Senior Eric Grootenboer opened the floodgates in the 11th minute off a VJ Hachaba cross, and Dordt never looked back.
Freshman Cody Van Holland added another goal in the 25th minute – the first of his career. It came on a strike from outside the goalie box to give Dordt a 2-0 lead.
Senior Steven Talsma’s 78th-minute goal put the game completely out of reach, and Grootenboer added a second goal on a header in the 89th minute to add the exclamation point.
Coach Dave Schenk inserted junior Joey Rasnic to start in goal, which wound up being a good decision. Rasnic stopped every shot he faced, including four on goal.
Dordt moved to 1-5-0, while Friends dropped to 3-4-0.
The Defenders get a week off before traveling to Jamestown, N.D. for a game on Saturday, Sept. 21.
