The Dordt Defenders needed a win to move above .500. They achieved it in comeback fashion, capping a 3-2 victory with an overtime goal from junior Eric Grootenboer. Some would say it should’ve ended sooner.

The Defenders (7-6) appeared to win the game as time expired with a shot from junior Steven Talsma, sending the crowd and Dordt’s bench into a celebratory frenzy. However, the officials overruled the initial call on the field and waved off the goal. Grootenboer left no doubt with his 93rd minute golden goal.

The final minutes were made more dramatic since Dordt had already come back from deficits twice in the match. An 85th minute goal by Brady Van Holland tied the game at 2-2. This came 17 minutes after Wesleyan freshman Adam Jahnel gave the Tigers a lead with a 40-yard laser over sophomore keeper Jon Brinkerhoff.

Dordt also trailed 1-0 after a goal from the Tigers’ Nick Sterling in the 46th minute. Grootenboer answered 35 seconds later with the first of his two goals. The Ontario native now has eight goals on the year, tied for the team lead with senior Josh Brinkerhoff.

Josh’s younger brother Jon kept Dordt in the game with some critical saves in goal. The Tigers’ top scorer, Hugo Gonzalez, threatened numerous times off through-ball breakaways, but was foiled by the sophomore goalie.

The pesky, scrappy Tigers gave Dordt issues throughout with their physical style and good front-line speed. Talsma and junior Brian Miller each received yellow cards. The Defenders were short starting mid-fielder David Riley and forward Derick Sackey because of injuries.

Dordt outshot the visitors on goal 10-8

Dordt moved to 3-2 in conference, positioning themselves for the second half of the conference season. They play at Midland on Saturday.

Dakota Wesleyan, now 2-10-1 (1-4-1), will play South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday.
