(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's soccer team bounced back from a loss on Saturday with a win over the Northwestern Red Raiders on Tuesday, September 27 in a match played in Sioux Center. The Defenders got a goal late to get up and finished off the match by holding off the charging Raiders 2-1.
Dordt scored in the 11th minute on a Derick Sackey to Josh Brinkerhoff throw in that Brinkherhoff snuck past the goalkeeper.
Northwestern tied the game in the closing moments of the first half when Gabriel Goncalves sent in a cross to Graham Kinsinger who headed the ball past Dordt's Brian Verwolf with 00:11 showing on the first half clock.
The two teams were scoreless in the second half until Eric Grootenboer sent in a volley off a corner kick in the 71st minute and Dordt withstood the Northwestern challenge in the final 19 minutes for the win.
Dordt outshot Northwestern on goal 7-6 and had a 7-4 corner kick advantage. Verwolf made five saves in goal for the Defenders who are now 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. Northwestern falls to 1-1 and is 5-3-1 overall. Dordt will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday in conference play at 3:15.
