Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Trinity International

September 12, 2009

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Defenders head into GPAC conference play on a high note as they escaped with a 2-1 win today over Trinity International to improve to 3-2 overall while TIU drops to 0-7.

The Trojans and Defenders played evenly through most of the first half with the Trojans owning a narrow 5-4 lead in shooting but it was Dordt's Peter Mollema that got the lone goal of the half when he went down the right side outrunning a Trojan defender and neatly tucking the ball into the bottom left of the net with less than two minutes to go in the half.

Down a goal, Trinity started the second half well and got a brilliant goal from Casey Thompson to equalize as he ripped a ball from the left side of the pitch outside the 18 and buried it in the top right corner behind Dordt goalie Brian Verwolf in the 52nd minute.

Dordt would end up playing the last 30 minutes of the match with only 10 players as sophomore defender Tom Stepanek was sent off after receiving his second yellow of the contest. Less than 3 minutes after Stepanek was sent off, Dordt sophomore striker Phil Nywening dribbled around a couple Trojan defenseman and scored into the right half of the goal giving Dordt a 2-1 lead with 27 minutes remaining.

Although Dordt would spend the majority of the time left in their own half, TIU could not find the Dordt goal as they took 13 shots in the 2nd half but could not get a ball behind Dordt's keeper Verwolf. Dordt managed only 2 shots in the second half.

"Aaron Coon (Junior; Thornton, Colorado) came in for us in the back after Tom (Stepanek) got sent off and gave us a great 30 minutes," said Dordt coach Dave Schenk, "he played solidly and we didn't have a lot of scoring chances in that game but we really capitalized on the ones we got."

Karl Linbad registered one save in the loss for TIU while Verwolf had 4 saves in the match for Dordt College.

Dordt will begin its GPAC schedule with a trip to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, September 16 with a match time of 8 pm.
