Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Jamestown College
October 10, 2009
(Sioux Center) Despite a long bus ride and cold weather conditions the Jamestown Jimmies came out hot against Dordt College this afternoon and after just 14 minutes of play the Jimmies found themselves up 2-0 on the Defenders.
The Jimmies struck early when, just 3 minutes into the contest, Ryan Kuhry finished off a ball that the Defenders were unable to clear after a Jamestown corner kick. Kuhry hit the ball well and found the top left hand corner of the Dordt goal to give the 1-0 lead. Nine minutes later a Dordt defensive breakdown would allow Bryan Edens to get behind the defense for an unassisted goal, stretching the Jimmies lead to two.
Down 2 goals in just 13 minutes the Defenders came right back and narrowed the margin back to one less than a minute later. Phil Nywening (SO; Thamesville, Ontario) took a pass from Roland Osae-Oppong and pushed it past the Jimmies keeper in the 14th minute. Alex Geleynse (FR; Randolph, WI) would tie the game for Dordt when he scored his first of the season by heading the ball into the right side on a free kick assist from Tom Stepanek (SO; Hudsonville, MI) in the 43rd minute of play. The teams went to half with the score tied at 2 apiece and Dordt with a large 11-3 advantage in shots.
Twenty-seven minutes in to the second half Nywening scored again after a Joe Lammers (SO; Centennial, CO) through ball to break the tie and give Dordt the lead. The goal would stand up as the game winner in spite of some solid ball possession by the Jimmies in the final minutes of play.
Dordt outshot Jamestown 8-3 in the second half for a 19-6 advantage in the game. Jordan Gengler had 11 saves for Jamestown with Dordt's Brian Verwolf recording one.
Dordt improves to 8-5 overall with the non-conference victory.
Dordt will have almost a week off before taking to the pitch again on Saturday, October 17 at 5:30 pm in Hastings, Nebraska.
