Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Buena Vista
September 9, 2009
(Sioux Center) The Dordt men's soccer team improved to 2-2 with a 1-0 overtime win today over non-conference opponent Buena Vista.
The teams played 90 minutes of soccer without either keeper giving up a goal forcing the match into golden goal overtime. In the 96th minute of action, sophomore striker Phil Nywening (Thamesville, Ontario) knocked a ball into the bottom left corner of the net from inside the 18 yard box to give the Defenders the hard fought win. Nywening led the Defenders in scoring last season and this was his second tally of the 2009 campaign.
Buena Vista showed some fatigue late in the match as the Beavers were playing their third match in 4 days, having played matches yesterday and Sunday.
Dordt keeper Brian Verwolf recorded one save in the contest while Dustin Dobbels registered 8 saves for the Beavers. Dordt held a huge margin in shooting as the Defenders took 21 shots to Buena Vista's three. Dordt also held a big edge in corner kicks as the Defenders had 9 chances from the arc while BV had just one.
Dordt will next play at home against Trinity International on Saturday, September 12 at 1:00 pm.
