Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Sioux Falls
October 30, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt men's soccer team came in to today's match with the University of Sioux Falls needing at least a tie to keep their post-season hopes alive, they fell just short of getting much more than a tie.
Thirty minutes into the match Dordt midfielder Kevin DeGroot (Ontario, CA) sent a beautiful ball across the field to freshman striker Phil Nywening (Thamesville, ON) who neatly received the ball and then banged it in the back of the USF goal to give the Defenders the 1-0.
Dordt went in to half-time with the 1 goal lead and came out of half-time with a ton of determination to battle the next 45 minutes with the number 3 team in the conference. Just 10 minutes in to the second half the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick. Dordt junior goalkeeper Jordan Huisken (Chandler, MN) came up with a huge save on the kick to keep the Defenders up 1-0.
Nywening, who had scored earlier, was sent off with 20 minutes remaining in the second half after receiving his second yellow card, forcing Dordt to play a man down for the duration.
With just a little under 5 minutes remaining USF equalized when Zach Jurgens scored on a ball that had rebounded out from the goal.
With the sun beginning to get very low in the horizon, play continued with 2 ten minute sudden-victory sessions. Although a man down Dordt managed a couple of great runs forward in the OT sessions but were unable to score. USF was also unable to find the net in the 20 extra minutes of play and the game finished in a 1-1 draw.
"The men are to be commended for how hard they played tonight", said head coach Dave Schenk, "especially when you consider that we finished the final 40 minutes of the match with only 10 players on the field. I am extremely impressed with how hard these young men competed for the entire 110 minutes".
Dordt picked up a much needed point in conference play to keep their play-off hopes alive as they travel to Midland Lutheran on Saturday, November 1 to close out the conference regular season.
