Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Briar Cliff
September 3, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College men's soccer team dropped their second straight non-conference game to open the season at 0-2.
After 36 minutes of scoreless soccer Briar Cliff's junior midfielder James Bills got in behind the Dordt defense and tucked the ball in the net for the first goal of the match. Briar Cliff got the eventual game winner in the 71st minute when Aaron Witmer headed the ball in after it had rebounded out off the crossbar.
Dordt senior Siam Grobler cut the lead in half just 3 minutes later by netting a penalty kick which was awarded after Jake Kloet got taken down in the BCU 18 yard box.
"I was very pleased with how hard we competed the entire match, we just need to do a better job of capitalizing on our opportunities" said Coach Dave Schenk.
Freshman keeper Brian Verwolf had a solid performance in goal, making 9 saves for the Defenders including a couple from point blank range.
The win puts Briar Cliff at 1-1 and the two teams will meet again in a GPAC conference match to be played at BCU on October 7.
Dordt will host York (Nebraska) on Friday, September 12 in their next outing.
