Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Northwestern

(Sioux Center, Iowa) In a 2-1 win the Dordt men upset the Northwestern Red Raiders, who were recently ranked first in the NAIA Region III rankings. The Defenders entered the game with a four-game winning streak, ranked 9th overall in the conference, moving up to a tie for the 7th slot with the win. Before tonight, Northwestern, currently 3rd in the GPAC, had won 4 and tied one of their last five games including a win over perenial power Hastings College on Saturday.
Dordt's offense came out on top, matched up against Red Raider goalkeeper Ben Schneider, a 6-1 freshman from Colorado Springs, Colorado. In recent wins over Morningside and Hastings, Schneider only allowed one goal and totaled 11 saves, earning him recognition as the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Menís Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for October 8th-15th. Dordt also faced the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Menís Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week in sophomore Brad White. Dordt's defense held White to Northwestern's only goal, Northwestern's only scoring conversion in 98 minutes of play.
Dordt was the first on the scoreboard off of a goal by senior mid-fielder Danny Koolhaas, assisted by Kevin De Groot. Koolhaas' kick from the right side deflected off Schneider for a 1-0 Defender lead a tthe 15 minute mark. Northwestern's second-half rebound goal by White tied the game up with 70 minutes shown on the clock. Still 1-1 at the end of regulation, the teams faced off in the first overtime, and in the 98th minute, senior Ryan Coon connected with Danny Koolhaas for a give-and-go play that ended the game at 2-1 in Dordt's favor.
Coon's goal is his 43rd while at Dordt College and slides him into ninth place by himself on the career list and he now has 106 career points, good for eighth place all-time. Dordt will travel to Blair, Nebraska to take on Dana in their final game of the regular season this Saturday.
Dordt is now 5-4-2 in the GPAC while Northwestern slips to 7-3-1 in the league and 10-6-1 overall while the Defenders have improved to 8-6-2 and is their fourth win in a row and their fifth in their last six outings.
