Dordt College Men's Soccer vs. Doane
October 21, 2006
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender soccer team posted their second win of the week in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and fourth league win in a row with a 2-0 win over the visiting Doane Tigers.
The Defenders struck 35 minutes into the game on a cross from Mike Oppeneer to Steve Shannon for a 1-0 lead on the one-touch shot to the far post. The Defenders then got what turned out to be the final goal of the game when Shannon fired an entry cross that Ryan Coon was able to turn and drive into the net.
Down 2-0, Doane got three shots on goal but failed to convert on any of them in the second half for a 2-0 final, Dordt's 9th win of the season and 8th of the conference schedule. Brandon Vander Wel got the shutout and made five saves for Dordt College while Kyle Fritz gave up two goals while facing 10 shots.
The Tigers fall to 3-6-3 in the league and 5-8-3 overall. The Defenders put themselves in a good position in regards to post season play where the top four teams in the GPAC, minus Nebraska Wesleyan, will receive automatic berths in the post-season NAIA Region III tournament with the fifth and sixth spots going to the two remaining teams with the highest longo points.
