Dordt College Lacrosse vs. Missouri S&T
April 14, 2012
(Kansas City, Missouri) The Dordt College lacrosse team lost an 11-3 decision to conference foe Missouri S&T Saturday in Kansas City, MO.
The Sowers knew coming into the contest competing would be difficult going into the game without one of their senior captains Tyler Buys. Buy’s absence was felt on offense as the Sowers struggled to find the back of the net. Missouri S&T jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the Sowers made some changes defensively that turned the game into a hitting parade. Defensemen Jordan Shaffer and Jordan Harmelink laid some hits on the Miner attack-men leading the Miner offense to play on their heels with more reserve. Heading into halftime, the Sowers were down 5-0.
“We did some good things toward the end of the second quarter on defense and we definitely got the Missouri S&T attack men hearing footsteps with our hits,” said Harmelink. “Down 5-0 at half, we felt really good about our position to come back.”
The turning point of the game came in the opening minutes of the second half. Missouri S&T poured in 5 goals within the first few minutes of the third quarter. Down 8-0, the Sowers continued to struggle to find some offense until Mark Opp would find the back of the net off the assist from Joel Kranenburg.
“Same story as it has been all year,” Shaffer said. “We are playing too much defense.”
Mark Opp recorded two goals and Alex Soundy tallied the other for the Sowers.
Defensively, Jordan Harmelink led the team with five groundball pickups. Jordan Shaffer and Eric Spoelstra each had four. Jordan Yntema made 12 saves.
